What is the Freedom of Information Act?

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal law that grants the public the right to request access to records from any federal agency. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. Enacted in 1966, FOIA helps ensure transparency and accountability by making government information available to the public, with some exceptions. 

How FOIA Works

FOIA gives you the right to request any federal agency records, with certain exemptions for information that must be kept confidential to protect privacy or national security.

 

These exemptions include classified information, personal privacy records, law enforcement records, and trade secrets.
